TALKING 'BOUT THE GENERATION Jon Huertas, Alexander Skarsgard, and Lee Tergesen in Generation Kill, an Iraq
war miniseries from the creator of The Wire
Through the first episode of Generation Kill, HBO's miniseries about the elite Marine unit that led the first invasion of the
Iraq war, it was difficult to keep track of which helmeted, smudged-faced character was which. I feared writer-producer David Simon (creator of The Wire) and longtime collaborator Ed Burns were
just resorting to the old ''disorient the audience because war is really disorienting'' trope. I shoulda known better - this is one wild,
cliché-busting trip. By the second of Kill's seven hours, I'd learned: who the sane center of this story would be (Alexander
Skarsgard's quiet but firm Sgt. Brad Colbert); how Jennifer Lopez plays a big part in Marine fantasy life; and why Charms candy is bad luck in this
war. Now, having watched all five of the episodes HBO sent for review, I'm psyched for more of this head-spinningly thoughtful work. Unlike
Steven Bochco's 2005 Iraq-war flop Over
There, Kill is unconcerned with sympathetic characters - it lets its fact-based drama speak for itself.
Kill is adapted from a book by Rolling Stone
correspondent Evan Wright, who was embedded with those Marines and is a writer on the miniseries. He's also a character; as played by Oz's Lee Tergesen, he's our innocent-eyed
surrogate among the soldiers as they bump over desert terrain (Kill was shot in Africa) in Humvees that look as though they're always on the
verge of breaking down. The men, however, do not. They're fighting a good fight despite equipment that's so antiquated, one of them compares it
to Gilligan's Island: ''They're giving us rocks and coconuts to make radios.'' One standout performer is Wire
vet James Ransone, who, as Cpl. Ray Person, dispenses eloquent screeds about following often contradictory orders, saying tartly, ''You know what
happens when you get out of the Marine Corps? You get your brains back.''
Kill's blithely cynical tone - when an Iraqi citizen waves at the troops, a Marine responds, ''Thank you; vote
Republican!'' - never comes off as showbiz liberalism or cheap humor. You can tell that the writers responded to Wright's clear-eyed
reporting with all the precise details that accumulate to create a nuanced look at young men thrown into circumstances way beyond their control.
You may end up thinking we shouldn't be over there, or that we should be fighting, but with better planning and equipment. (You probably won't
think these early days were leading to a rapid ''mission accomplished.'') Still, Kill pays both you and its subjects two solid
compliments: It doesn't scream ''Take heed: This is a work of art!'' And it lets you form your own opinions about what its
social commentary is. A-

Jennifer Aniston or Jennifer Lopez? Oh, Lopez, definitely. She's a brunette. And has a few more curves!
That's good to hear! This past weekend, the National Inquirer had a story about the same, w / the usual melodramatic offense taken. Looks like
it's falling on deaf ears. About time . She didn't mean anything offensive; Jen's just concerned about getting the word out to the public and
raising $ for the children's hosp.
Marc Anthony will soon be starring with
wife Jennifer Lopez in a federal suit that
claims their guard dog attacked a flight attendant on a private jet.
Lopez had been flying solo in the personal injury suit filed last June in Brooklyn Federal Court, but Anthony is being added as a defendant
after J.Lo's lawyer gave him up as the owner of the German shepherd guard dog, Manhattan lawyer William Cafaro said.
"I was told by her counsel that Marc Anthony was the registered owner of the dog," said Cafaro, who represents flight attendant Lisa Wilson.
"The issue of who actually owns the dog will be determined in the course of the proceedings."
Wilson wants $5 million in damages from Lopez and her company, Nuyorican Productions. The suit will be amended this week to
include Anthony as a defendant.
Anthony and the dog, Floyd, accompanied Lopez on a Gulfstream IV flight from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, L.I., to Burbank, Calif., on July 3, 2006, Cafaro said.
Court papers say Lopez warned Wilson, 40, a flight attendant for NetJets Inc., how to behave around the dog, court papers. An hour into the
flight, Floyd lunged at Wilson as she walked past, "attacking her and biting her pant leg," the suit said.
She fell, suffered a serious back injury and has been unable to work.
Cafaro contends the dog's owners had a duty to put a muzzle or leash on Floyd, and to warn his client "to stay completely away from the
dog."
Lopez's lawyer, Marina Spinner, could not be reached for comment.
^ she doesnt even know who was the owner of the dog, that is first thing to know when you sue someone for that. Funny, she only wants money, like $5 mill
is her paycheck for 3 past years
Singer Marc Anthony has reportedly been named alongside his wife Jennifer Lopez in a lawsuit over an alleged dog attack.
Lopez was the subject of the
original suit filed last June in New York's
Brooklyn Federal Court, after the pair's guard dog allegedly pounced on NetJets Inc. attendant Lisa Wilson.
It is claimed the incident happened on a flight from New York to California on July 3.
And according to the New York Daily News, Anthony's name is set to be added to the document this week, after his wife's attorney revealed the German
shepherd is officially owned by the salsa star.
Wilson's lawyer William Cafaro says: "I was told by her (Lopez's) counsel that Marc Anthony was the registered owner of the dog. The issue of
who actually owns the dog will be determined in the course of the proceedings."
According to court documents, Lopez warned Wilson, 40, of how to behave around the animal. But an hour into the flight, the German shepherd lunged at the
attendant's neck as she walked past, "attacking her and biting her pant leg."
Wilson alleges she fell down, suffering a serious back injury
which has left her unable to work.
She is seeking $5 million in damages from Lopez and her company, Nuyorican Productions.
Rapidly slimming Jennifer Lopez is in danger of diet obsession
Wednesday, 3 September 2008
After giviing birth to twins Max and Emme in February, renowed workaholic Jennifer Lopez has been training day and night for a triathlon she's competing in on 14 September.
'I thought: "What can I do to make my babies proud?"' J-Lo revealed. 'It's very important for me to set an example for both of
them.
'If I have to crawl across that finish line, I'm going to. I keep telling myself when I'm training: "This is for charity. Don't embarrass
the family! Get it done, Lopez!"'
But behind her public positivity, the 39-year-old is suffering a weight crisis that's starting to tear her family apart.
According to our source, she gained 5st 5lb while pregnant and has lost 3st 8lb so far. But she's hit a wall trying to burn off the remaining stubborn
pounds, no matter how much training she does.
And despite struggling to balance the challenges of motherhood, J-Lo's refusing to reduce her gruelling exercise regime and rarely eats more than 1,000
calories a day.
Frantic husband Marc Anthony, 38, who's had to bear the brunt of her
moods, finally snapped and ordered her to consult a doctor. She was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland, which causes the body to 'slow
down'.
This means J-Lo has to try even harder and this pressure has had a knock-on effect at home. Even though she and Marc are madly in love, there have been some
tense moments.
'Let's just say some of their discussions have been pretty explosive,' says our insider.

They often bring up thyroid issues with Jen. Not sure if that's because a lot of people deal with it and they figure maybe it's likely, or if it's
true that she does have some sort of thyroid problem.
