Visitors to Easton Town Center Saturday, July 26 experienced a brush with Hollywood.
A man who has helped celebrities like Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger stay in shape visited the center to share his fitness expertise.
Celebrity fitness trainer Gunnar Peterson visited Easton from noon to 2 p.m. July 26. He was a guest of Victoria's Secret's VSX Sports Store.
Peterson worked with 150 fitness trainers from around Central Ohio, dubbed the "VSX Team Trainers" for the day."We're going to be talking about getting the most out of your average work out," Peterson said in a phone interview Thursday,
July 24. "I'm looking forward to being there. We'll have a Q and A session, for the group of trainers trying to brand themselves. It's about
how to make yourself the 'it' trainer, and distinguish yourself in the field. Is it a job or is it a career? If it's a job, I don't want to
talk to you."
Peterson criticized would-be trainers who think they can instruct others after spending limited time in a gym.
"They're just people who hang out in the gym all the time," he said. "Just because you've been in the car doesn't mean you know
how to drive."
Peterson spoke from Long Island, N.Y., where he said he was working with Jennifer Lopez. Before that, he said, he was in Europe.
He has worked in fitness training for 20 years, and has some acting credits to his name as well as a 2005 book, The Workout .
He guest-starred in episodes of the show Matlock, and he had a cameo in Rocky Balboa (2006) as a weight-lifting trainer.
"It was at Mr. Stallone's insistence," he said. "I was playing a trainer -- it's not much of a stretch."
He said he is more proud of the planning he put into the film.
"I put together, designed, and developed the workout sequences for that entire film," he said. "It was fun. Those are the little perks --
every now and then you get to be in a movie."
Working with Stallone in the gym and on the set was a contrast, he said.
"He also directed, so it was intense," he said. "There's a lot of people there looking to him for answers, and in the gym; I'm not
looking to him for anything but effort and he brought that every time."
As for the scoop on Lopez, Peterson has a film role in mind for her, as well.
"If they ever do a movie called Wonder Woman they should put her in it," he said. "She's a wife and a mom, and she trains. She's got a
music and movie career, she dances. ... It's unbelievable to me what she manages to get done."
Working with celebrities has its rewards, he said.
"There's a lot worse jobs than mine," he said. "They're goal-oriented, and that's rewarding. I also work with a number of
professional athletes, and it's great to see their work translate to the court or the field."
For non-celebs, Peterson offers some advice.
"I don't think people should be overwhelmed by what their current physical condition is," he said. "Just get started, and it adds
up."
He said the rewards of a good workout are long lasting.
"Change it up and be consistent," he said. "Exercise improves mental acuity ... flushes toxins. It's like taking your car to Jiffy Lube
everyday."
When faced with the trend other celebrity trainers have taken in the direction of reality television, Peterson said he would have to be selective.
"It depends on the message of the show," he said. "If it's about hook-ups in the gym, I'd have to pass. But if it's a show where
you'd be getting correct information out there, and dispelling myths about fitness, than I would definitely do that."
Jennifer Lopez talks about being a sex symbol, loving motherhood and her stylish pal Posh.
it's the July 29th issue
