His movie career was going down hill before Jen and remember he signed for a lot of movies before bennifer.
He started with the oscar as everyone knows but he did go off track, the critics and (fans to an extent) hated Pearl Harbour, the movie where he was a blind superhero bombed. They wanted a franchise but it didn't work.- these were all before Jen.

In some repsects Bennifer was good for him because he became more famous and no he can live off that to stage a comeback.
Its telling that they always ask him about our Jen because that is a big part of his fame. They don't ask our Jen about it because its not a big part of her fame or relevancy.

If you ask people on the street about Ben Affleck they would mention he dated Jen.
If you ask the average person on the street about Jen Im not sure they would mention Ben.
