"Jennifer Lopez answers your beauty questions!"
Imagine you're talking to Latinas from the block you grew up on: What's the one piece of beauty advice you'd give them?
It may sound silly or corny, but when you feel good inside, when you're making the right choices and living your life in a good and positive way, it shows. There's a great saying that I heard a long time ago: "Until [age] 25, you have the face that God gave you, and after that, you get the face you deserve." In other words, however you act, whatever you do, it's going to show on your face. It's a reminder to live right.
Describe the day you felt your most beautiful ever.
There are a couple: One was at the Alma Awards in 2000, where I wore a fuchsia pink Vera Wang dress, my hair was blonder and it was down. It was a very special night [she received the Entertainer of the Year Award that night]. I felt very happy, and I think you could see that. Being on the red carpet is a fantasy especially having grown up in the Bronx with not that much at my disposal. It's like [being] Cinderella.
Growing up, who were your beauty and style icons?
I had a lot of different influences: I really liked Madonna in the 1980s--her street, feminine, sexy style. As I got older, I loved the elegance and classiness of Jackie O and the sexiness of Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner.
When did you realize your body was different from most of Hollywood? And when did you realize you were going to work it anyway?
I knew way before I got to Hollywood that I was different. [Hollywood] wasn't about being curvy. But the things I'm most proud of are the things that make me...me! Being Latina and being an individual. You have to know who you are.
So what is it about Latina beauty that's driving the world crazy these days?
Even though we come in all colors, there are certain things you think of when you think Latina: voluptuous bodies, dark brown eyes, long hair, creamy skin. It's a beauty that's accompanied with being sensual. We have a certain power and confidence.
What's the best beauty secret your mother passed on to you?
Being happy. When you're happy on the inside, you just glow and shine. I noticed that about my mom; she was most beautiful when she was the happiest. A practical one: You can use Vaseline for everything! To take off makeup, moisturize your knees, elbows--Vaseline was the all-purpose [solution].
So what does Jennifer Lopez do on a bad hair day?
When I'm like, I'm gaining weight, my hair's a mess, nothing I wear looks right, my face is argh!--I'll make a list of all the things I have and that I'm grateful for, and ask myself, What are you being so silly about?
Jennifer Lopez Fills in the Blanks
A Latina never leaves the house without... putting on perfume and looking in the mirror. The secret for bad hair days is a ponytail or a hat. I never go to bed without saying my prayers. I never go to the beach without sunscreen. In my purse you'll always find sunglasses and lip gloss. I've never seen anything more beautiful than my niece and nephew laughing. Latinas are the bomb because we are passionate creatures by nature sometimes mistaken for crazy!
Jen sounds off! We played a little free association with Jennifer. We said a phrase, and she gives her immediate response:
Latina: red lipstick
Jennifer: can work...sometimes
Latina: tacones
Jennifer: Love! I love being taller.
Latina: salsa
Jennifer: I just love it!
Latina: Puerto Rico
Jennifer: my island
Latina: plastic surgery
Jennifer: hmm, not so much
Latina: diva
Jennifer: I heard that word one too many times.
Jennifer by the numbers
hours she works out in one week: 3
"I really just run. I do about three or four miles every few days."
hours she sleeps: 8
"I try to sleep seven or eight hours every night."
times she talks to her mother in one day: ?
"I talk to her every few days. I just spoke to her a little while ago, in fact. Otherwise I hear about it. I get, 'Are you alive?!'"
